Al Rajhi Bank, Kuveyt Türk and Kuwait Finance House lead the TAB Global World’s Strongest Islamic Banks 2026 ranking
  • 82

The assessment of 100 Islamic banks highlights how leading institutions combine scale with earnings capacity, operating efficiency and financial resilience.

  • Al Rajhi Bank ranks as both the world’s largest and strongest Islamic bank, followed by Kuveyt Türk and Kuwait Finance House for financial strength.
  • The 25 strongest banks record a median return on assets of 1.87% and a cost-to-income ratio of 35%.
  • Smaller institutions achieve strong rankings, demonstrating how financial performance and disciplined risk management can offset limited scale.

Singapore, 27 October 2026 – Al Rajhi Bank ranks as the world’s strongest Islamic bank in TAB Global’s World’s Strongest Islamic Banks 2026 ranking, followed by Kuveyt Türk Katılım Bankası and Kuwait Finance House. The annual assessment evaluates 100 Islamic banks, recognising institutions that combine earnings capacity with sound balance sheets and financial resilience.

Türkiye Emlak Katılım Bankası and Qatar Islamic Bank complete the top five. Alinma Bank, Kuwait Finance House–Bahrain, Albaraka Türk Katılım Bankası, Bank Albilad and Dubai Islamic Bank round out the top 10.

The results highlight the importance of converting balance sheet capacity into sustainable financial performance. Larger institutions hold a clear advantage, but the rankings also identify smaller banks that outperform their positions by assets.

Al Rajhi Bank leads both size and strength rankings

Al Rajhi Bank also leads the Largest Islamic Banks ranking, with assets of $278.2 billion, followed by Kuwait Finance House at $139 billion and Dubai Islamic Bank at $113.2 billion.

Maybank Islamic ranks fourth by assets at $84.2 billion, ahead of Alinma Bank at $82.9 billion and Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank at $76.4 billion.

Of the 25 largest Islamic banks, 60% also ranked among the 25 strongest, while 84% placed in the stronger half of the assessment. The findings show that scale provides an advantage when banks translate it into stronger earnings, efficiency and resilience.

Profitability and efficiency distinguish the strongest banks

The 25 strongest Islamic banks generated a median return on assets of 1.87% and a cost-to-income ratio of 35%. They also maintained better financing quality and higher reserve coverage than lower-ranked institutions.

The assessment shows that rapid financing expansion alone does not ensure greater financial strength. Sustainable growth requires funding, earnings, capital and risk-management capacity to keep pace, while improvements in existing operations can strengthen a bank without exceptional balance sheet expansion.

Smaller banks demonstrate strength beyond their size

Türkiye Emlak Katılım Bankası ranked 37th by assets but fourth in financial strength. Indonesia’s Bank Aladin Syariah ranked 91st by assets and 18th for strength.

Their results demonstrate how stronger performance across other financial measures can offset the disadvantage associated with limited scale. For larger institutions, the rankings reinforce the importance of turning size into operating efficiency and sustainable earnings.

Sovereign risk added to the 2026 framework

The 2026 scorecard introduces sovereign risk as a seventh assessment dimension, with a 5% weighting, recognising the influence of the sovereign environment on banks’ financial strength.

Financing and deposit growth are adjusted for consumer-price inflation in each market to improve comparability. Together, the size and strength rankings provide benchmarks for assessing the scale of Islamic banking franchises and their ability to sustain financial performance.
