“(My children) are both in banking… and I still feel kind of privileged that they will call me every once in a while for ideas, thoughts and education,” he shared.

The session revealed both strategic insight and emotional candour, as Gupta handed the baton to his successor, Tan Su Shan, CEO of DBS Group, with characteristic humility. “She wears different shoes. A lot of things, she will do better than I did. And that is how it should be.”

In her tribute, Tan reflected on the cultural transformation he enabled, “He made us look at every single negative wreckoon—W-R-E-C-K wreckoon. He changed the way we operate—from vertical to horizontal. We now have tech, ops, HR, product, risk and treasury working together.”
