HDFC Bank has appointed Anup Bagchi as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), succeeding Sashidhar Jagdishan on 27 October 2026. The Reserve Bank of India approved his appointment for three years. Bagchi becomes the first external executive to lead India’s largest private-sector bank. The transition follows six years under Jagdishan, whose tenure encompassed the pandemic, regulatory restrictions on digital activities and the bank’s July 2023 merger with housing-finance parent HDFC Limited. The merger expanded its mortgage franchise and brought banking, insurance and investment businesses into a larger financial services group. Jagdishan leaves an expanded franchise with funding and governance challenges In his final earnings call on 17 October, Jagdishan highlighted investment in core technology and artificial intelligence capabilities, alongside a branch network that had doubled over five years. He said the maturing distribution network would support further customer acquisition and deposit growth. The Asian Banker recognised him as Bank CEO of the Year in Asia Pacific in 2024. Improving the enlarged balance sheet’s funding mix and profitability remains a central task. In the quarter ended September 2026, deposits grew 18.8% year on year, while current and savings account deposits increased 10.8%. Faster growth in time deposits left CASA at 31.6% of total deposits. Net interest margin stood at 3.16% on total assets, while standalone net profit rose 4.7%, with lower treasury gains weighing on earnings. Jagdishan’s departure also follows scrutiny of the bank’s governance. He decided not to seek another term after former Chairman Atanu Chakraborty’s resignation raised investor concerns. An external review concluded in June that there was no evidence substantiating the governance issues Chakraborty had raised. Separately, the board penalised Jagdishan and two other senior executives in July following a review of a state-agency deposit arrangement. Bagchi brings experience across banking, investments and insurance Bagchi joins after more than three decades with the ICICI Group, which he entered in 1992. He served as Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Securities before becoming an Executive Director of ICICI Bank in February 2017. His responsibilities included retail, business and rural banking, followed by wholesale banking. He also chaired ICICI Prudential Asset Management until May 2023. The Asian Banker named Bagchi Retail Finance Person of the Year in Asia Pacific in 2021 for helping expand ICICI Bank’s retail business through digital transformation. His work included developing digital platforms and integrating branches, partnerships and customer ecosystems into the bank’s retail strategy. His most recent executive role was leading ICICI Prudential Life Insurance from June 2023 until October 2026. In FY2026, annualised premium equivalent, a measure of new business, grew 2.2%, while the value of new business increased 10.9%. Its new-business margin improved to 24.7% from 22.8%, showing stronger profitability from new policies despite modest sales growth. The insurer, since renamed ICICI Life Insurance, reported further improvement in the six months ended September 2026. New-business value rose 22.3%, with a margin of 26%, as protection products accounted for a larger share of sales. These results provide a more recent measure of the franchise Bagchi leaves behind. Deposit mobilisation, margins and productivity shape the next phase His experience across banking, investments and insurance could support efforts to deepen relationships across HDFC’s expanded customer base. The challenge will be to translate that breadth into better deposit mobilisation, appropriate cross-selling and higher productivity, while strengthening governance and maintaining credit discipline. Speaking on HDFC Bank’s October earnings call before taking office, Bagchi said he would consult regulators, customers, shareholders and other stakeholders before setting organisational priorities. He identified growth, margins, quality and productivity as areas for his forthcoming assessment, supported by disciplined capital deployment and governance. His first detailed strategy will indicate how he intends to build on Jagdishan’s investments and address the enlarged group’s remaining challenges.
