GitHub’s Thomas Dohmke: “We have a zero-trust strategy”

Thomas Dohmke, GitHub’s CEO, discusses the platform's adoption of modern software practices, stressing cultural shifts within developer teams. GitHub blends DevOps and open-source models into finance, using cutting-edge technology such as containerisation and cloud-native architecture.

Thomas Dohmke, CEO, sheds light on GitHub’s adoption of modern software development practices. Software development increasingly centres around technologies such as containerisation, cloud-native architecture, and automated scaling. The success in adopting platforms like GitHub often hinges on a cultural shift within developer teams. To facilitate this, GitHub is importing DevOps learnings and collaboration models from its open-source environment into financial services.

He also highlighted the importance of focusing on developer communities as their main customers and the strong emphasis on supporting and sustaining the open-source community. Since 2020, GitHub has worked with GenAI, integrating these tools into their solutions for software developers. Today, in files where GitHub Copilot is enabled, up to 60% of the code is being written by the AI-pair programmer in popular coding languages like Java, while 55% of all code files created on GitHub across all programming languages are generated by these tools. Dohmke expects this proportion to exceed 80% in the coming years. The results from early adopters of GitHub’s Copilot, such as Westpac, show a 46% productivity improvement with their 60-strong developer team.

GenAI will not replace but fundamentally alter the role of software developers, emphasising strategic and architectural skills and oversight. It also enables addressing the modernisation of legacy codes and the declining skill set surrounding it.
